Marble is a non-foliated metamorphic rock composed of recrystallized carbonate minerals, most commonly calcite or dolomite. Pure white marble is the result of metamorphism of a very pure (silicate-poor) limestone or dolomite protolith.
Marble is one of the most versatile materials. Its three principal uses are construction, interior decoration and sculpture.

Marble is a stone with a firm crystalline structure and slight porosity. Due to its structure, marble can be polished to improve its shine and is thus a common and attractive stone for building applications. The restricted marble porosity, mainly when refined, makes it less susceptible to water damage. However, calcium carbonate, the main ingredient of marble, is exceedingly susceptible to acidic agents: it rapidly dissolves in some acids.
The actual influence of acidic contact will vary with the kind of the acid: chlorides, sulfates, and other chemical compounds respond in different ways with marble. By products are created that possess a wide range of solubility and influence on the durability of marble. Therefore, it is essential to ascertain the exact kind of pollutants that cause marble deterioration.
Marble is found in Kogi, Nasarawa, Oyo, Kwara states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Marble is used extensively in the construction industry and most of the marble used in Nigeria is imported. Investment in marble production, cutting and polishing will be a worth while venture. The market exists in Nigeria and the neighbouring West African countries. The international marble and granite trade was valued at $2.5 billion in 2005, with production of about 19.6 million tons. Italy is the world leader in marble, granite, and stone sector, exporting over 38% of finished material and importing 18% of the world trade. Nigeria’s production is 1.3 m tons annually, with less than 10% exported (0.03% of world trade in 2002).
