Overview

Sorghum bicolor, commonly called sorghum and also known as durra or jowari, is a grass species cultivated for its edible grain. Sorghum originated in northern Africa, and is now cultivated widely in tropical and subtropical regions. S. bicolor is typically an annual, but some cultivars are perennial. It grows in clumps that may reach over 4 metres high. The grain is small, ranging from 3 to 4 mm in diameter. Sweet sorghums are sorghum cultivars that are primarily grown for foliage; they are shorter than those grown for grain.

Investment Opportunities

Demand for sorghum malt for production of beers, syrups, beverages, microbiological media and baby foods will continue to rise.  Nigerian brewing industries require more than 500,000mt of malt per annum.  Some of these industries produce sorghum malt on industrial scale.  Use of malted sorghum, rather than raw grains, as a source of fermentable sugars has been advantageous.

The increased use of white grain sorghum by breweries might result in competition in the market between grain for food and grain for brewing purposes.  This problem can be solved by identifying and breeding specific cultivars for brewing purposes.

The qualities of malt extracts from sorghum and barley are comparable.  Consequently, the potential use of sorghum malt extract in the manufacture of food drinks, baby foods, dietary foods, is very promising.

Feed utilization is a necessary component of the system.  Feed mixers can utilize lower-quality grains that cannot be used in food products and will absorb additional production beyond local good demands
