Oil Palm (Elaeis guineesis) is an unbranched monoecious plant. It can grow to a length of 20m – 30m and lives up to 200years.It has a typical adventitious root system. All mature plants have a solitary columnar stem with persistent frond bases. The Oil Palm used in Commerce, Elaeis guineesis, is indigenous to West Africa. The major oil palm growing areas in Nigeria are in the South especially
the South-Eastern and Mid-Western regions ecologically conforming to the tropical rain forest and derived savannah portion of Nigeria.
Oil palm is an important vegetable oil in the Nigerian oilseed market. In terms of volumes, the oil palm and kernel oil accounts for about 70% of the Nigerian oil market. The current annual demand for palm oil alone is in excess of 1 million tons. With domestic production at 785,000 MT there is thus a production deficit. Investment opportunities exists in the development of new oil palm plantation and the expansion of existing ones. In addition to the large plantations, smallholdings and out grower’s schemes are being promoted by the Federal and State Governments.
